“It is time for the Jedi to end.”
The words ring out as the first trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ends.
The first teaser trailer for the next installment of the “Star Wars” saga, “The Last Jedi” was released over the Easter weekend, during a panel at this year’s Star Wars Celebration. The film is going to be released on Dec. 15 this year.
“The Last Jedi,” is being both written and directed by Rian Johnson (director of “Looper” and “Brick,”) an occurrence only preceded by George Lucas. The fact that Johnson has full reins of the film could be read as either a good or bad sign. On one hand, the story is one complete construction, coming purely from John. On the other hand, Johnson is being given the keys to the castle, and has no one to place checks on his ideas of storytelling.
Clocking in at two minutes, the trailer does what every “Star Wars” trailer does best: showing great images, addressing themes of the film and revealing a few key settings of the movie. The preview focuses on Rey (Daisy Ridley), as she begins to train and learn under Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).
The trailer begins with a couple shots of Rey and the scenery of Ahch-To, the planet that Rey journeyed to at the end of “The Force Awakens.” She discovers an exiled Luke, and “The Last Jedi” picks up moments after the two meet. After this, a voice takes over, a grizzled but recognizable Mark Hamill, instructing both Rey, and the audience on a metatextual level, to breathe.
From there, Luke instructs Rey to open her mind, and to see past the labels of light and darkness, and instead look towards the balance. As each concept is brought up, key images, sounds and dialogue from previous movies can be heard, including the respiratory sounds associated with Darth Vader. This concept of balance suggests that the galaxy is ready to move past the ideas of Jedi and Sith.
After these more conceptual and spiritual themes, the trailer shifts to the first scenes of General Leia (the late Carrie Fisher), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) all recovering from the events of the previous film. Finn is still recovering from his injuries on Starkiller base, and Poe’s X-Wing is destroyed in a large explosion.
Another key image from the footage is a group of speedsters racing across a white, rocky landscape. The vehicles are spraying red dust along their path, and the director has confirmed the planet to be Crait, a mining planet with an old connection to the Rebellion.
The trailer then begins to quickly cut between a major space battle, Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver) dueling someone and a possible attack on Ahch-To by the Knights of Ren. Each piece reveals tiny bits of the movie, while still keeping much of the film’s narrative hidden.
The trailer ends back on Luke’s voice over, explaining that he knows one thing: that “it is time for the Jedi to end.” The line is harrowing, coming full circle to the title of the film, while binding the film’s exploration of the Force’s place in the galaxy with the path Rey has begun to travel upon.
