Pink compiles greatest hits
Out of the mostly talentless teen pop movement of the late 1990s emerged an unlikely star.
Alecia Moore, better known as Pink, has been the voice, face and unofficial spokesperson for all the outcasts and societal rejects since her 2000 debut.
When she first started, she was slated to be the anti-Britney Spears, a rebel in a sea of pre-fabricated pop music. Yet with the release of her debut album, “Can’t Take Me Home,” the artist struggled to find her voice.
It wasn’t until the release of her sophomore album, “Missundaztood,” that Pink broke free from the boundaries her record company had put on her. She changed her image, genre and voice. She transformed herself onto an outspoken singer with a don’t-mess-with-me attitude.
The result was a jarringly personal and wittily fun album, which in 2001 turned the then 22-year-old pink-haired star into a witty badass and defender of the underdog.
Since then, Pink has released three more albums, including 2003’s “Try This,” 2006’s “I’m Not Dead” and 2008’s multi-platinum Grammy-winning “Funhouse.” These albums spanned singles like “Trouble,” “Who Knew,” “U + Ur Hand” and the singer’s first number one hit, “So What.”
Two years after the release of her last album and fresh from a sold-out world tour, Pink is back with three new songs, a greatest hits album and an outspoken video.
“Raise your glass if you are wrong in all the right ways, all my underdogs, we will never be anything but loud and nitty-gritty, dirty little freaks,” She poignantly croons in her newest single, “Raise Your Glass.”
The music video, released Nov. 2, illustrates Pink’s support for gay marriage, her protest of bull fighting and animal abuse and an outspoken embrace of anyone who has been written off for being who they are. These themes have been focal points throughout her career in songs like the coming-of-age “Don’t Let Me Get Me” and the mocking “Stupid Girls.”
“Greatest Hits…So Far!!!” is a loyal representation of a singer’s journey, one that does not apologize for what she believes in and is not afraid to look within herself. The album includes 16 of her most popular songs, such as “Get The Party Started” and “Family Portrait.” It also features three new tracks: the lead single “Raise Your Glass,” “F**kin’ Perfect” and “Heartbreak Down.”
The new tracks give a preview of what is to come in the tattooed singer’s future. Pink is currently working on her upcoming studio album, which is planned for an early 2011 release date. Whatever is next for the Pennsylvania native will surely be worthy of our time and our ears.
“Greatest Hits…So Far!!!” hit stores Nov. 16.
