Film fun despite predictable plot

Knowing the ending doesn’t make the movie “Life as We Know It” any less enjoyable.

After a terrible first date, Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl) and Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) never thought their paths would cross again, but after the death of their best friends, Peter (Hayes MacArthur) and Alison (Christina Hendricks), they are forced to share a life they never expected. According to Peter and Alison’s last will, Holly and Eric are to raise Sophie, the couple’s 1-year-old daughter, in their deceased friends’ home.

Holly and Eric are not pleased with the request, and try to find an alternative in vain. Forced to raise Sophie, tensions rise as two adults share a household and try to juggle work at the same time by, for example, taking Sophie to work. In addition, court-mandated, periodic checks by social services put Holly and Eric in a rough situation; they usually show up at the worst moments, for example, once seeing an exposed empty bottle of wine and batch of special brownies.

Although Holly and Eric have their share of tough times, they come to realize that parenting is not all bad. Watching Sophie take her first step or say her first words is the highlight of their day. With this movie, we not only watch Sophie grow up, but we see Holly and Eric maturing as well.

The movie includes some humor that is only understood by those who have experienced parenting, leaving many adults laughing and some young adults staring in confusion. Although this romantic comedy has a predictable plot line, the quirky actors make the movie unique and fun to watch.
