The food trucks were informed in fall of 2012 that they would have to move out by May 25, 2013, to allow space for the construction of South Congress Hotel.

It’s no secret Austinites love their food. When outsiders come to Austin, the first place we want to show off is our favorite food truck. At just about every street corner, we can find anything from stuffed chocolate doughnuts, shrimp tacos or classic cheeseburgers. Although these items seem common in just about any other city, there is something about these food trucks that seem to bring people to Austin.

When asked to narrow down my top five food truck recommendations, it was anything but easy, since I am an avid food lover with a wide palette. However, I did my best to come up with ones that I think are worth any line at any time of day.

5. Hey! You Gonna Eat or What?

This food truck located on 1720 Barton Springs Rd is the place to be from noon to 9 p.m. every night with a break between 4 and 5 p.m. My favorite dish is the classic Shiner Monte Cristo. This turkey and cheese packed sandwich with their homemade cherry and fig jelly is extraordinarily packed with intense flavors and nothing short of satisfactory p. Another crowd pleaser is the Lone Star BLT, which includes the thick cut applewood smoked bacon that leaves your mouth wanting more.

4. Con Madre Kitchen

If you’ve attended St. Edward’s University and have yet to try this food truck out, then are you even really a Hill Topper? This food truck is conveniently located at the end of East Side drive known for their classic breakfast tacos and breakfast burritos; this truck is a must! Yes there are taco stands just about everywhere down South 1st or Congress, but there is not one unique like this gem.

3. Burro Cheese Kitchen

Sure, you’ve had a grilled cheese but have you ever had one on sourdough, stuffed with mac n cheese, cheddar and yellowbird sauce? This food truck is located right on South Congress past the Amy’s Ice Cream. The native Seattle man, Justin Burrow found this cheese-loving food truck in February 2013. Since then, it spread to the Congress location and Westlake where it is always open Tuesday through Saturday 11:30-8:30 p.m. If you’re looking for a new way to spice up your plain grilled cheese, this is the perfect place to be!

2. The Mighty Cone!

This establishment used to only be a treat during ACL Music Festival. Before The Mighty Cone, this was the famous Hot ‘n’ Crunchy truck that had all the ACL visitors raving.Chef Jeff Blank realized his sales were “out of the roof” that he had to create a place that was open all year long. Now The Mighty Cone can be found in three different locations including the West Campus area at 16th and Rio Grande Street as well as The Picnic on Barton Springs everyday but Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

1. Torchy’s Tacos!

It’s almost a sin to say you’ve never tried Torchy’s at least once in your college career. But if you have yet to try this food truck, never fear because there are multiple locations making it convenient for anyone to try. My go-to is the classic Democrat on corn tortillas, and let’s not forget that queso! Torchy’s will be sure to leave your tummy thanking you later no matter what you decide to order. They truly live up to their motto when they say “a taco for every appetite.”
