Torchy’s secret menu item ‘the Matador’ impresses

Fact: Austinites have always had this infatuation with tacos. Whether the tacos come from La Fruta Feliz, Papalote Taco House or La Flor, we will eat ‘em. Basically, we will eat anything topped with cheese and salsa wrapped in a tortilla.

In order to keep restaurants set apart from others, it is important that they connect with customers — so employees dishing out some inside knowledge can go a long way. Torchy’s Tacos has proven this.

Our local taco restaurant ranks among our favorites, providing “damn good tacos” with many different filling choices.

The regular “Trailer Park,” “Crossroads” and “Dirty Sanchez” tacos are obviously favored, but it has been revealed that Torchy’s offers, under the radar, seven secret specialties.

Much like their standard offerings, these secret options are nothing short of beloved. “Ace of Spades,” “Trailer Park Hillbilly Style,” “Mad Cow” and “The Hipster” are all “Sacred Tacos.” More of these secret specialties include the “Jack of Clubs,” “Green Chile Pork Missionary Style” and “The Matador.”

I was feeling a little wild and decided to try one of these bad boys over the weekend. While all of these sound amazing, I chose to try “The Matador” mainly because I love brisket, but partly because it had a pretty cool name.

As soon as the waiter placed the red, plastic basket in front of me, I knew I made the right decision.

Another fact: “The Matador” was nothing short of its name — amazing. Pure awesomeness. This baby was filled with chopped brisket, grilled jalapenos, pickled onions, jack cheese, avocado, sour cream and cilantro and was served with Torchy’s famous tomatillo sauce, all atop a crisp corn tortilla inside a flour tortilla. Is your stomach growling yet?

Wait, it gets better.

Every single bite provided every single flavor the taco had to offer. The textures of the onions, avocado and brisket came together perfectly.

This taco is worth waiting for, but honestly, why would you want to wait?

All of Torchy’s Sacred Menu taco options are brilliant. And delicious.

Honestly, before I knew about this secret menu, I always thought Torchy’s was heaven on earth. Since I’ve engaged in such holiness this weekend, I now know that it is in fact heaven on earth.

Taco lovers should understand. And if you don’t, then you need to order off of this menu. Like, today.

Although Torchy’s announced its secret menu back in 2013, I’m sad to say that a good amount of locals have yet to explore this side of Torchy’s. Now that you know the not-so-secret secret taco menu, do not continue to be one of the unlucky ones. Get wild and try a secret taco. Or seven. It’ll be the best decision of your life.
