New cafe open on South Congress; expensive menu, average burgers

Would you spend $12 for a P.Terry-like burger?

As students, let’s face it: we’re practically poor. But when it comes to food we can all agree that splurging on a little grub is inevitable.

The new South Congress Hotel offers a new restaurant called Café No Sé. It looks super expensive from the outside. With its glass walls and exquisite chandeliers, black and white uniformed waiters and stellar view of South Congress Ave. you would expect to break the bank in an attempt to score a simple meal there. But since we are broke college students, we decided to face the impossible task of dining for two at the fabulous Café No Sé on $25.

This restaurant is a little bit on the pricier side of things but it’s definitely possible to get a filling meal for two, for less than $25. We opted to split a café cheeseburger with sweet onion, pickles on buttermilk bun for $12 and a slab of bacon for $4. We elevated our shared meal with a plate of malted No Sé fries. Here’s the breakdown.

The cheeseburger was average at best. There is nothing special about it to warrant paying $12. It tasted like an average P-Terry’s burger. The price could be justified if you take into account the fact that there are two thick meat patties and that they source their meat from local butchers.

While the cheeseburger was pretty mediocre, the slab of bacon was out of this world. They were not joking when they said “slab”. The bacon was thick and smokey. It didn’t have that crunchy, cheap, fried feel that so many restaurants have. It was juicy, but at the same time, its flavor and texture was not such that it competed with the burger itself. Amazing.

The malted fries were also average. They carry a similar resemblance to HopDoddy’s truffle fries. The sauce that was dripped over the fries was delicious, but the fries were not seasoned enough to take it to the next level.

Truthfully, everything at this restaurant is overpriced but it is a nice place to splurge if it is payday and you’re feeling like an adult — especially right now that the hotel hasn’t opened yet and there’s not a lot of foot traffic.
