Live out your wildest fantasies as a goat in new, weird game

What started out as a joke during a game jam at Coffee Stain Studios has now been released to the public and is one of the strangest, most fun games that has been released this year. It is titled, simply, “Goat Simulator.”

Given the title, you can automatically assume what the game is about, and you would be right: the player is a goat, doing goat things. This includes running, hopping, licking and baa-ing, which are the core gameplay mechanics of “Goat Simulator.” But what you would not assume is how absolutely insane the game actually is.

First of all, “licking” attaches your tongue to a multitude of objects within the game, including bicycles, basketballs and even trucks. You can then drag these items throughout the world (just a small town road with a couple of buildings, a field and some hills), tossing them into the air or smashing them into townspeople. The goat’s tongue is absurdly long, and it makes for great fun when you are dragging along a person’s fainted body over to a trampoline to bounce it high into the sky.

Yes, you can make your goat jump on a trampoline. And tumble down a waterslide. And headbutt oncoming traffic. This does not even scratch the surface of all the activities you can simulate your goat doing within the game, which ranges from mundane to utterly fantastical. A lot of the game’s fun is found in exploration of its world (which unfortunately is only one map, but the developers have since announced they will be releasing a patch with another map as well as multiplayer for free this May), discovering all the crazy easter eggs and extra abilities for your goat that are hidden in various pockets throughout the plot of land available to you. Becoming the Goat King is particularly interesting and hilarious.

“Goat Simulator” is full of bugs, which is the point. The developers explicitly stated they kept in every bug they encountered that did not crash the game. This makes for a lot of unexpected moments, like licking a car right as you headbutt it and being ricocheted into the stratosphere by the explosion. These bugs help give the game a lot of replayability in spite of only having one map, since you never know what might happen while you are running around.

With a similar points system, “Goat Simulator” plays a lot like the classic Tony Hawk skating games, except with a goat licking stuff. It is a casual, fun game that is easy to slip into and then close down in between classes or homework for a bit of fun. At only $10, it is a cheap way to have a good time on your own or with some friends.
