COPENHAGEN: Danish Fashion

Black and grey are all you need in your wardrobe according to Denmark’s standards.

Although fashion interests me, I never expected to write a blog post about fashion in Denmark. This could be because, for a while, I just categorized fashion here as being typical European. However, lately I have noticed some trends and have clearly been spurred by what people are wearing.

Beginning the generalizations:

#1 Clothing:

Just wear black or grey. Oh, and don’t leave home without a scarf no matter what the weather is. Only wear color in the Summer unless you dare to be different!

#2 Shoes

First of all, it took at least a month to get used to sneakers being worn with an everyday outfit that wasn’t a pair of Vans, Keds, or Converse.

Nike Free

If you do not own a pair, you will forever be on Massie’s “Out” list. I wonder how many Nike loving Danes have actually worked out in these shoes …

New Balance 574

Mostly worn by European hipsters. And yeah, those are the shoes that were popular in elementary school and made a comeback in the US probably because some rapper started wearing them … I wasn’t so surprised by this one, though. I kind of want a pair … oops!

Timberland Boots and Air Force Ones

Okay, this is the most confusing thing to me. Honestly this trend has provoked me to write this article. What does this country know about Timbs or Air Force Ones? I have seen numerous girls wearing knee high Timbs. :0 I think I’m curious and confused as to where Danes get an Urban influence on their style. The amount of stores I have seen that call themselves “a hip hop store” could possibly be the culprit. I feel like in the US we get an urban influence on our style depending on where we live, but here it could just be a result of the media. Granted, they are great boots for the winter …

Air Force Ones, I don’t know what to say.

Short black boots

Enough said. Everyone needs them.

#3 Bags:

Fjällräven

So very popular here. I have no idea how to pronounce it, but I just learned it is actually a Swedish brand for outdoor equipment. They even make super tiny ones, perfect for a kid or diaper bag. They don’t seem very comfortable though!

Shout out to the kids:

If there is a possibility that it will be cold or wet (basically everyday) parents often send their kids out in a rain/snow suit. Forget layering your child, just throw this suit on them and they are ready to go.

Okay, I’ve said enough.

I realize now that I’m going to have to make another post about fashion design in Denmark in the near future.
