The Writing Center is a free, academic resource that is available to all students. Offering thirty-minute, one-on-one appointments with a faculty or staff member, the Writing Center aims to help any student with any writing project. Writing samples can range from journals to formal assignments like capstone.

“I would encourage everyone to go to the Writing Center. It is an extremely useful and important step when you write your papers,” said sophomore Brooke Rigby.

Students can make up to two appointments per week and each appointment is approximately thirty minutes long. Even if a student does not have time to attend an in-person meeting, the Writing Center also offers an online service where students can submit an assignment that is a paragraph or shorter for review and receive online comments from faculty members. 

“The Writing Center was the difference between getting B’s on papers to A’s on papers,” said Rigby.

During an appointment, the faculty or staff member carefully reads for the issues within the paper that the student is most worried about like organization, a good thesis statement, or proper MLA format. The Writing Center is truly there for students so any issue a student has with his or her paper can be addressed in the appointment.

Because the Center is such a benefit to students, appointments fill quickly and some available appointment times are at extremely inconvenient times to students. The Writing Center encourages students to make appointments well in advance so they can have the appointment times they want.

“I’ve visited the Writing Center before and it has been really helpful. But normally, I can’t make the leftover appointment times,” said sophomore Lindsey Anderburg.

While many older students know the value and importance of the Writing Center, freshmen are beginning to catch on to its usefulness as well.

“I haven’t been to the Writing Center yet, but I definitely will be making an appointment in the future,” said freshman Victoria Gonzalez.

The Writing Center is a huge asset to students. It helps create a polished and effective paper at no cost to students.
