Police investigating possible homicide next to university property

A body was found on a hillside at an apartment complex next to St. Edward’s University property Sunday morning. Police are treating the crime as a homicide and began investigating after they received a 911 call around 10:35 a.m. on Oct. 16.

Currently, there is a large area roped off on the 2700 block of South Congress that includes Heights on Congress apartment complex property and university property.

The person found is an unidentified white female who did not have any identification on her when she was discovered, said Corporal Anthony Hipolito of the Austin Police Department (APD).

“[The] body showed obvious signs of trauma,” Sergeant Richard Guajardo of APD said.

No suspects have been identified, as “we’re very early on in the investigation,” said detective Brett Bailey from APD.

The location of the crime has not been determined, as it is unclear whether the crime occurred at the place where the body was found, or at a different location.

There is no immediate danger to people in surrounding areas, including the university community, Guajardo said.

It is unclear if the homicide is connected to the university, according to Hipolito.

According to Guajardo, the University Police Department assisted in collecting information for the investigation.

University spokesperson Mischelle Diaz confirmed that the body had been found near campus, but not on campus. The university sent out a notification via e-mail to students and staff regarding the ongoing investigation. At 4:45 p.m. the Austin police department reported that the crime scene had been cleared.
