Kozmetsky Center previews fall events

This year, the Kozmetsky Center will demonstrate its theme of Change.” On Sept. 13, climate change expert and distinguished visiting fellow Diana Liverman spoke about climate change.

Also during September, the Kozmetsky Center will host two events related to El Camino Real, Spanish for “the Royal Road,” a Texas trail dating back to 1680. Between Sept. 18 and 27, the Kozmetsky Center will be putting on the El Camino Real de los Tejas Traveling Exhibit in the Scarborough-Phillips Library. The exhibit will feature sources and artifacts depicting the connection of Spain and Mexico with Texas.

“The El Camino exhibit is the largest exhibit we’ve had in the library in recent memory,” said April Sullivan, archivist and curator of special collections at the library. “I hope students will become more familiar with the history of the roads to the missions, and I hope they will see the exhibition and have a good experience in the Century.” On Oct. 4, visiting fellow and New York Times correspondent  Richard Halloran will discuss “The Rising East and China.”

Schmittou also mentioned an upcoming collaborative project between Tulu Bayar and the St. Edward’s art department.

“We are doing a couple of things related to the art department this year,” Schmittou said. “Soon you will see a call for submissions where students and alumni will be asked to submit a piece of art relating to the theme which the art department will announce. Then Tulu will see what she can envision to Internet.” On Nov. 9, Joseph Treaster will present on the evolution of journalism and communication in the age of the Internet and social media.
