Spears leads women’s golf with first place finish

The St. Edward’s women’s golf team opened up the 2011-2012 season with a second place finish at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic in Clymer, New York on Sept. 18-19.

Junior Wallis Spears shot a 72 in the first round and 73 in the final round to win first place in the tournament’s field of 103 golfers. Spears was also named Heartland Conference Golfer of the week for the week of Sept. 19-25.

Junior Jacy Benites tied for seventh place, and Melissa Gonzalez placed 12th in the tournament.

Sophomore Ryanne Haddow tied for 28th, and freshman Haley Haugh tied for 30th place.

Women’s golf will be back on the green on Oct. 3 for the University of Central Oklahoma/Mahogany Classic at the Lincoln Park East Golf Course in Oklahoma City, Okla.
