Car erupts in flames outside Moody Hall

A 2007 Dodge Caliber burst into flames outside of Moody Hall on Wednesday.

No one knows what caused a car to erupt in flames in the Moody Hall parking lot late Wednesday afternoon, but it took four fire extinguishers to calm the blaze until the Austin Fire Department arrived.

The vehicle belonged to Andres Madrid; who graduated from St. Edward’s University in December. Madrid was in Moody Hall when he was contacted by junior Pedro Fuentes, who recognized the car and knew it belonged to Madrid.

“He didn’t believe me at first,” Fuentes said. “But after the third time I said ‘your car is on fire’, he got up and ran do.”

Ryan Wormley, a technical support analyst at St. Edward’s, was the first to notice smoke coming from the hood of the vehicle. Wormley said he saw a ball of fire fall from the engine of to the ground. That’s when he called the University Police Department.

“The officers reacted very quickly,” Wormley said. “Within seconds they arrived on the scene. I stuck around for a few minutes before going inside [Moody] to finish some work. Three minutes later, the fire department arrived. Both departments were very responsive and reacted bang.”
