Happy to return to Texas, Gregorian will talk values at St. Edward’s University graduation

Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian says he will emphasize the importance of values in his commencement speech to St. Edward’s University graduates on Saturday.

In an interview with Hilltop Views, Gregorian said his speech will touch on several topics, including the nature of education, a sense of connectedness, modern technology, life and the human experience and the difference between careers and jobs. He said he will also talk about how the mission of St. Edward’s resonates with him and his educational beliefs.

“I’m especially intrigued and pleased with Fr. [Edward] Sorin’s vision for the university,” he said of the St. Edward’s founder. “I believe that you don’t prepare for one job. You prepare for a movies.”

Gregorian, a former president of Brown University and the New York Public Library and provost of the University of Pennsylvania, has received more than 60 honorary degrees in his career. He said that one of the reasons that he chose to speak at St. Edward’s commencement is his love of Texas and its state of mind.
