Movie Review: Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop

TBS talk show host Conan O’Brien walked into the Paramount Theater to the echoing of “Team Coco” chants. “This makes me feel like Mussolini,” said O’Brien, referring to the former fascist Italian leader.

On March 13, O’Brien, along with a packed theater, watched the premiere of the documentary “Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop” at South-by-Southwest. Directed by Rodman Flender, the film captures O’Brien behind the scenes in the immediate months following his highly-publicized departure from “The Tonight Show.”

A combination of humor and manic-like behavior became the driving force behind O’Brien’s comedy tour — “The Legally Prohibited on From Being Funny on Television Tour” — during the time when O’Brien’s NBC contract buyout left him unable to host a television show.

The 88-minute documentary showed that, privately, if you can even imagine, O’Brien is even funnier than his on stage persona. There was never a dull moment when O’Brien interacted with his staff. During one scene with his assistants and writers, O’Brien refused to let anyone talk unless they spoke into a banana as if it were a telephone. Everyone reluctantly obliged.

The film as a whole, while undoubtedly hilarious, is also heartwarming and empathetic. The scenes of O’Brien interacting with his young children were precious and showed a different side of the talk show host. O’Brien’s endearing sense of humor displayed in the film was so charming that even Jay Leno might feel inclined to join the “Team Coco” chants.

The film will be shown in select theaters and will be available on DVD and to AT&T U-verse TV subscribers.
