SWAT standoff at apartment complex near St. Edward’s University ends with suspect in custody

A SWAT standoff between a man at a south Austin apartment complex and police Tuesday night ended after three hours with the suspect in custody, the Austin Police Department said.

Blake Watkins, 26, was subsequently charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, APD Police Corporal Anthony Hipolito said.

Hipolito said police received a 911 call from a woman who said she received a Facebook message asking someone to call police. Hipolito said he could not go into detail about the nature of the call because the case is still under investigation.

When police arrived at Watkins’ residence approximately 9 p.m., they called in a SWAT team because Watkins had a gun.

The St. Edward’s University Police Department partially blocked off the campus when the stand-off at the 511 Woodward Ave. apartments began.

The man, who is not a student at St. Edward’s, stood on the balcony of his apartment with a gun, Communications Director Mischelle Diaz said. His apartment is across the street from the Dujarie and Basil Moreau residence halls.

University police sent an email to students an hour after the standoff began asking them to stay in their residences and avoid the south side of campus. The email said the suspect was suicidal.

“The reason [the police] tried to keep students inside is because of the proximity of the dangerous situation to campus and the residence halls,” Diaz said.

The residence assistants in the residence halls advised their students to remain inside. Students in LeMans Hall whose windows faced the scene were brought temporarily into the hallways, and Dujarie and Basil Moreau residents were asked to stay away from the windows.

A subsequent text message from the university’s emergency message system noted that UPD had blocked off the entrances into campus at Theatre Pass, Andre and Moody Drives.

The entrance to campus from South Congress Avenue remained open.

Shortly after the suspect surrendered to police just before midnight, university police gave campus the all-clear.
