Mars’ new album sends fans to moon

Singer, songwriter and producer Bruno Mars has released his first album titled, “Doo-Wops and Hooligans.”

Peter Gene Hernandez, also known as Bruno Mars was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and comes from a very musical family. Mars’ father was a Latin percussionist and his mother was a trained vocalist, and he claims that his parents’ music influenced his musical style. Perhaps this is why Bruno Mars has such a diverse sound on his debut album.

Mars has been enjoying the view from the top ever since he collaborated with rapper B.o.B. on the track “Nothin’ on You” and Gym Class Heroes’ front-man Travie McCoy on the summer anthem, “Billionaire.” His latest hit, “Just the Way You Are” has a contagious sound that stops time as the sultry singer declares, “When I see your face, there’s not a thing that I would change ‘cause your amazing just the way you are.” Obviously, Mars knows what women, men and the entire population wants to hear.

“Doo-Wops and Hooligans” is an album with a sound so diverse that it expands the audience of R&B. Mars experiments with many sounds such as reggae, pop rock, 1950s-inspired soul music and an acoustic sound that appropriates the album title. Mars collaborates with established and well-known artists, Cee Lo Green and Damian Marley on two separate tracks.

It’s evident Mars doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously, and you shouldn’t either. His lyrics are fun and all over the place. On the Caribbean inspired track, “The Lazy Song,” Mars sings, “I’ll be lying on the couch just chillin’ in my snuggie, click to MTV so they can teach me how to dougie.”

In the feel good song, “Marry You,” Mars begins the song, “It’s a beautiful night, we’re looking for something dumb to do, ‘hey baby, I think I wanna marry you.'” Mars gets in touch with his soft side on the track “Talking to the Moon,” which parallels a Justin Timberlake style ballads.

This album is a great start for Mars as he proves his versatlity in song writing and musical composition.
