Halloween events to thrill and chill

Feeling brave, bored or just out of the holiday spirit? This season, Austin is offering several events to help spook you back into the Halloween mood. Events range from haunted houses, trails and parties, all to make Halloween an enjoyable weekend.

The House of Torment

This fall the House of Torment hosts the third installment of its apocalyptic trilogy, the “Revenge of the Immortals” haunted house, next to Highland Mall. Venture through the city infested with biochemically mutated humans while you search for a cure for the “contagium” virus.

If that isn’t enough thrill, journey through the life of Dr. Incubus, a demented physician, and his twisted experimental surgeries with “Nightmare Mansion.”

The House of Torment is also unveiling its newest feature–Austin’s first “Haunted 4D Experience.” The ride combines 3D theater technology and special effects to guide the avid thrill-seeker through a terrifying maze.

The house was voted America’s ninth and Texas’ number one haunted house by Hauntworld Magazine. Tickets are packaged at $24.99 for all three events and $19.99 for admission to “Nightmare Mansion” and “Revenge of the Immortals.” The House of Torment is open from 7 p.m. to midnight throughout the rest of October, and purchasing tickets online in advance will guarantee entry.

Scare for a Cure

Save your brains from zombies and help save breasts from cancer at Scare for a Cure’s “H1Z1: Zombie Wasteland.” Head out in search of a sanctuary and help the resistance in a zombie apocalyptic age. The nonprofit allows full contact at their haunted house exhibit, unlike House of Torment. Net profit from ticket and merchandise sales will benefit the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas and five additional local organizations selected by volunteers.

On Halloween weekend, Scare for a Cure will have live performances from Hipnautica, Interstellar Transmission and Lucid Dementia.

Tickets can only be purchased online. Basic admission tickets cost $25, but for a gorier experience, guests can buy red-level tickets for $30 each. Scare for a Cure will be open Oct. 29-31 from 7:30 p.m. to midnight.

Zombie Ball

If a night of ghouls, fashion, music and booze is what you desire on the eve of Halloween, then look no further than the Zombie Ball at Seaholm Power Plant. The decommissioned plant will serve as an arena for lounges, VIP booths, dance floors, two stages and multiple bars.

The line-up includes Roky Erickson, White Ghost Shivers, Half Snake, PONG, Killa Dilla, Rion King, DJ Manny, Minor Mishap and Sssnake. The event, hosted by Sustainable Waves and A-town Entertainment, will also feature a Haunted Couture Fashion Show and a VJ light show. Tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door and $65 for V.I.P.

Haunted Trails

Haunted Trails leads guests through an interactive adventure down the paths of the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, located in west Austin on Loop 360. The trail requires problem-solving skills and some physical demand because guests will hike, crawl and run to several checkpoints that require participants to solve a riddle or puzzle before continuing. Guests will encounter different Halloween characters, like zombies and hockey-masked slayers. The trail will also feature several special effects, such as a man-eating dinosaur and giant spiders.

The trail is not as spooky or terrifying as the haunted houses, but it does offer an enjoyable time, according to the Austinist website. Profits from the event will help fund the preserve and the very trails guests walk through. The trail will be open from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 30-31. Tickets cost $35 apiece and may be purchased on the Internet or by phone.

Austin Ghost Tours

In search of paranormal phenomena, Austin Ghost Tours has compiled a list of locations around Austin that are said to be haunted. Groups will venture through downtown Austin and learn about strange and frightening tales in Austin history.

Guests will visit the old surgical hospital on 10th Street, the Texas Confederate Men’s Home for Civil War veterans and the Texas State Capitol, to name a few.

Tours last about an hour and a half and begin at the haunted Hofhentz-Reissig building, known today as Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill. There will be nine tours during Halloween weekend for $30 each.
