O’Donnell’s actions speak louder than witchcraft

Who actually still believes everything they said a decade ago? Who is not deeply embarrassed by something they did fifteen years ago?

While immensely hilarious, the old videos of Christine O’Donnell, the Republican Senate candidate for Delaware, on Bill Maher’s HBO show do not tell us everything there is to know about her.

Past experiences and upbringing do give insight into what a person is like; however, they do not completely define who the person has become. We have been focusing too much on her past and not enough on her recent actions. O’Donnell is not fit to be a senator—not because she once dabbled in witchcraft, but because of her current political views and misuse of funds.

Despite the humor inherent in her statement from 1998 – that evolution is a myth because monkeys are not still evolving into humans – our concern should be focused elsewhere. For instance, she continues to lie about attending Oxford University, when in reality she only took a Phoenix Institute course that happened to be in an Oxford classroom. Maybe we should consider that she is against abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. If that isn’t enough, perhaps we should remember that she used campaign funds to pay for half of her rent this year. And she allegedly still owes her campaign staff payments from her 2008 campaign.

We can’t forget that the Federal Elections Commission is currently investigating her over claims made by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington that she added over $20,000 to her personal bank account from campaign funds when she wasn’t even campaigning.

Finally, we should think about the fact that Christine O’Donnell hired and paid her mother to be on the campaign.

Bill Maher is definitely enriching our entertainment by re-broadcasting clips of O’Donnell from his old ABC show, “Politically Incorrect.” Keep in mind, though, that she was playing the role of the “Crazy Christian Conservative.” While she may actually believe certain parts of what she said, it is more likely that most of those statements were provoked by the prospect of 15 minutes of fame.

Her views on important issues and her recent actions are what residents of Delaware should refer back to when determining whether to cast their votes in her favor.

We should look to her whisper campaign against her Republican primary opponent, Rep. Mike Castle. By funding a campaign that insinuated Castle is a homosexual and later neither claiming nor denying the attacks, but simply acknowledging their existence, O’Donnell practices exactly the brand of politics that she says she wants to remove from Washington. O’Donnell aims to be seen as one of the common people yet feels the need to exaggerate her educational achievements.

She stands against the “bloated government” but pockets money from her gracious donors. She claims to know Americans’ struggles from her past financial woes but neglects to pay her staff.

These are the real issues that we, and particularly the citizens of Delaware, should be considering. So laugh at the “Saturday Night Live” skits and amusing YouTube videos, but look further when deciding whether to add support to her cause or to end her career.
