Taking Back Sunday revist hits with new album

Taking Back Sunday’s new live acoustic album, “Live From Orensanz,” takes listeners back a few years. Even though the album includes no new material, the rock band delivers songs that are as passionate as ever.

Released on Aug. 17, the album showcases Taking Back Sunday’s performance at the Angel Orensanz Center in New York City with power that can only be felt in front-and-center, face-melting seats. The album immediately dives into the thrilling vocals of “Make Damn Sure.”  In comparison to the original recordings of songs such as “New Again” and “Set Phrases Must Go,” the acoustic versions present on this album demonstrate a much more powerful and compelling energy than ever heard before.

Original Taking Back Sunday fans can rejoice because the classic “My Blue Haven” is included on the album. However, this version of the song shoves you even harder into the rollercoaster of insanity present in their work—from maniacal to depressive and back to maniacal again. Then, just like that crazy lover from 2005, the song leaves you desperately thirsting for more.

The album then mellows out with its seventh song “Carpathia.” The middle of the second-to-last song, “Everything Must Go,” may not hold the audience’s attention at first, but once the orchestra kicks in, doubts will be dissolved. The album ends with the epitome of the American teen anthem, “Cute Without the ‘E,” closing out strongly with audience participation.

Above all, Taking Back Sunday has proven that they can still pull the heartstrings and puppet us into feeling whatever emotion they are trying to convey. “Live From Orensanz” has currently flooded me with 15-year-old girl angst. Oh, the thrill of punching things and the undying desire to be old enough to smoke.
