District 13 leaps into action

Full of action and idealism, “B13: Ultimatum” is appropriately titled. Though there is less actual parkour—an unofficial sport based on creatively overcoming physical obstacles—in this movie than in the first “District 13,” there are still some seriously impressive stunts and bad-guy-mashing action.

Numerous epic chase scenes and one-against-many battles make “Ultimatum” a more than worthwhile action movie, while clever character interaction and timing gags provide comic relief. Not that much relief is needed, as the whole movie is suffused with a lighthearted, energetic mood; yet at the same time it is convincingly serious about the social issues and ideals it tackles.

There is also some blatant and humorous socio-political commentary, such as the evil corporation named “Harriburton.” The people making the movie obviously had a lot of fun doing it, and that always makes for an enjoyable movie-going experience.

Cyril Raffaelli, in the role of Captain Damien Tomaso of the police force, is the most destructive character, while Leïto (David Belle) does a lot of seriously impressive running away.

Aided and abetted by the gangs that inhabit District 13, Tomaso and Leïto set out to uphold the ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity by saving the district from the destruction levied by corrupt government officials allied with Harriburton.

The message is clear: Beware of huge, multinational corporations. This movie is a rocking ride that’s certainly worth the money. It’s got everything you would want from an action movie—no more or less than it promises to be.
