Mental health focuses on an individual’s state of well-being. Although we are just a student based organization, here at St. Edward’s University the Psychological Society emphasizes the importance of having a sound lifestyle, mentally and emotionally.
We believe that an individual’s place within our community is a very significant one. The ability to create positive feelings of oneself and others is essential for a community to work efficiently. In order for us Hilltoppers to have a stable environment, we need to make sure our peers can reach a mutual state of well-being. How can we do this you might ask?
We can start by noticing signs of someone struggling. Severe anxiety or worry, and persistent hopelessness are common signs that a fellow student may be wrestling with a mental health problem. Other signs include an initiated or increased use of drugs and/or alcohol, and an expression of suicidal thoughts.
Some things you may want to do is try to be there for them by either approaching them in a friendly manner and listening to them, or nicely encourage them to seek out professional help. Psych society is here to help students relax and unwind. In previous years, we held an event called Sunset Yoga & Tea. During the event, students had the chance to relax and speak to their peers in a calm and accepting environment. Balancing all that life demands can be stressful for any person, however, there is hope for those that struggle with mental issues.
There are many ways to address and conquer mental health issues. A great way to help those that have mental health issues is to create a dialogue within our community by holding activities and events that share awareness. With an increased sense of community, an individual can reach a better state of equilibrium within themselves.
