Lyanne Guarecuco says farewell with a poem
Hilltop Views, it’s that time of year, when I say goodbye to the ones I hold dear.
My friends, co-workers and fellow newspaper geeks: it feels weird to walk away after so many weeks.
Late night Mondays in Andre Hall … well actually, that part, I won’t miss at all. But I will miss all of your amazing faces, especially those of you who are really going places!
Audrey and Raneem — my hard news gals. In you I’ve found great advice and lifelong pals. Your strength and talent is unparalleled, and you’ve shown me girls can do anything they want incredibly well.
Amber, my sassy friend from the “coast,” your side-eye remarks are the ones I’ll miss most.
Hannah, my sensei taco queen, you always seem to know exactly what I mean. Thanks for taking me under your wing; in life and in work you’ve showed me so many things.
Maxie, my best pal who laughs at all my jokes: you know I’ll miss you more than some of these blokes. Your giggle is contagious and often sporadic; I should have known being your friend would feel this automatic.
Sara, you must be my prettier long-lost twin. Meeting someone as cool as you is like scoring for the win. You’re going to be amazing with online next year — with you taking over, I can’t name a single fear.
J-Rog, you’re cool and you’ve kept the sports section alive. For that, you have my respect and deserve a high-five.
Jenna Jaco, you are the coolest of the cool. Do you think South Korea is ready for you to take over and rule? You’re an OG to HV and my favorite grammar queen, and the most fashionable nerd I think I’ve ever seen.
Amar, you may not know this, but your surfer voice is my favorite to imitate. Overhearing you talk to Bo makes me really, really wish I knew how to skate.
Bo, thanks for lending us your movies! Overall, I think you’re super groovy.
Jena Heath, I respect & admire you more than you know. Thanks for this opportunity to do good work and let that show.
Taylor, thank you for bringing our words to life every week. Nicole, I don’t really like this word, but your infographics and outfits are always on “fleek.”
Laura, without you, our stories wouldn’t look bright. Thanks for filling our pages with photos and always getting it right.
Jacob, here we go, my co-editor-in-chief. I could fill 1000 pages with your HV talk each week. Without you, I don’t know how the paper would get done. I’m glad we worked together so you could be the “bossy one.” I know you’ll keep it up and do an awesome job next year. (Please stop looking around Blox just for fun; you cause me a bit of fear.)
This year has been a blast figuring out a job I wasn’t sure I could do. Then I met all of you guys, and you became my glue. I will miss you more than you all know. Sorry this cheesy poem is the only way I know how to go.
To the new crew, good luck! I know you will all do so well. Before you know it, this will be you, writing your farewell.
