Wendy Davis’s wheelchair ad reveals Greg Abbott’s hypocrisy

State Sen. Wendy Davis’ controversial political advertisement, “Justice,” has been called “desperate” by her rival, Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott, according to Amelia Chasse, a spokesperson for Abbott.

“Abbott ruled against a rape victim who sued a corporation for failing to do a background check on a sexual predator,” the ad claims.

Another instance showcases how Abbott allegedly argued that a women who had lost her leg through amputation was “not disabled” because she had an artificial limb.

In a brief forty-second long video, Davis’ ad highlights how Abbott, in 1984, sued for and won $10.7 million in injury compensation after a tree fell onto him when he was out running, leaving Abbott partially paralyzed and wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. It then names various instances where Abbott, who is a major proponent of tort reform for the state of Texas, has denied any sort of repercussion payment for various victims. It closes with a chilling statement — “Greg Abbott: He’s not for you.”

In response to criticisms raised by Abbott and others, Zac Petkanas, Davis’ communications director told the Huffington Post this:

“What this ad shows is that after rightly seeking justice for himself, Greg Abbott turned around and spent his entire career denying that same kind of justice to other victims,” Petkanas said. “Whether they were victims of brutal rape, whether they were disabled individuals, or whether they were patients who were maimed by a surgeon who was under the influence. These are important questions that Texans have a right to know about.”

Political ads are always used to slander opponents in campaigns, but the most powerful thing about Davis’ ad – if anything – is that it reveals Abbott is a hypocrite. This, however, doesn’t mean he deserves to be demonized (nobody does); however, it’s important to have this kind of transparency for voters so that they understand the values and motives of those they’re voting for. Interestingly enough, Abbott seemed to face a challenge as he and his party attempted to rebuff the ad.

“It is challenging to find language strong enough to condemn Sen. Davis’ disgusting television ad, which represents a historic low for someone seeking to represent Texans,” Chasse told CNN. “Sen. Davis’ ad shows a disturbing lack of judgment from a desperate politician and completely disqualifies her from seeking higher office in Texas.”

The only real disturbing lack of judgment is why anyone who was able to successfully repair their life after a travesty is campaigning to make it harder for others in similar position to do the same thing.
