Miley Cyrus exhibits nude escapades in new video

“Wrecking Ball” was released on Aug. 25, 2013.

Well, Miley Cyrus, the new queen of controversy, has done it yet again.

A mere two weeks after her infamous VMA performance, Cyrus released the music video for her new single, “Wrecking Ball.” The video premiered on Monday, and within 24 hours it had over 19 million views, shattering the Vevo record for most viewed video––a title previously held by One Direction’s “Best Song Ever” video.

For those who have yet to give in to the craze, let me illustrate the video for you.

At one point Cyrus tearfully sings into the camera in a style nearly identical to Sinead O’Connor’s iconic music video for “Nothing Compares 2 U.” She then suggestively licks a sledgehammer. The icing on the cake is definitively Miley Cyrus riding atop a wrecking ball clad only in Doc Marten’s boots. Oh, and she licks the wrecking ball chain at one point, too––maybe she really has the hots for demolition equipment.

Before we go any further, we need to take a minute to applaud Cyrus’s PR team; really ladies and gentlemen, excellent work. Cyrus won no awards at the VMAs, but her performance ensured her domination of the headlines. Just as that hype started to die down they gave us Wrecking Ball; now Miley is on everybody’s minds again. All of it leading up to the release of Cyrus’s new album “Bangerz” on Oct. 8th. They are working some PR genius keeping Cyrus in the media spotlight.

The video has been met with a wide array of reactions. Cyrus’s critics were flabbergasted at her nudity and sexually suggestive hammer licking, and what kind of message it sends to her legions of tween fans. Others lamented the loss of their beloved Disney darling to this new version of Cyrus.

In a recent interview about her new music video, Cyrus said that her fans needed to look past the obvious, use their imaginations so they can see how hurt and vulnerable she is and feel just how emotional the song was for her.

Even if you can get past the confusion of watching a naked Miley Cyrus straddling demolition equipment, there doesn’t seem to be any subtext to the music video. It’s like trying to find depth in a shallow puddle: a fruitless endeavor.

Cyrus may be trying to convey deep emotional pain and vulnerability but the shots of her crying into the camera as she sings are so contrived and try-hard that they border on hilarious.

“Wrecking Ball” is actually a pretty decent power ballad, but the video completely distracts from that. Nudity has been used really well in other emotional pop music videos. Rihanna and Britney Spears used nudity very well in “Stay” and “Everytime,” respectively. Yes, they are nude, but it complements the song without looking like softcore porn.

Miley Cyrus can be nude if she wants to and it will never be our place to tell her what she is allowed to do with her body. That being said, not everything has to be so sexually explicit. It’s just unnecessary. If Cyrus is trying to prove that she is all grown up now, running around without pants on all the time is not the way to prove it. Cyrus is a talented vocalist but nobody is ever going to pay much attention to that as long as she keeps acting so juvenile.

Miley, it’s time to start growing up.
