Year in Review: “Fright Night” masters the art of campy horror

An underrated ’80s horror revamp, “Fright Night” in 3D was a blast to watch in theaters.  It was gory, funny, and didn’t take itself too seriously – the perfect campy horror film. Oh, and the vampires in it didn’t sparkle.

Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a pretty ordinary kid in high school. He’s just broken out of his nerd phase and gotten a hot girlfriend – everything a teenager could want. Then when Charley’s old friend Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) tries to convince him his new neighbor, the handsome, overly friendly Jerry (Colin Farrell), is a vampire, life as Charley knows it flies out the door. Charley becomes obsessed with taking Jerry down, seeking out the Vegas Chris Angel-like star Peter Vincent (David Tennant) to help him. Over the course of the movie, Charley battles the increasingly powerful Jerry and even the now undead, one-armed Ed.

While many may forget the film in a few months time, but it’s still very enjoyable and deserving of one of the best horror films of 2011.
