Fun Fun Fun Fest: Spoon returns home for Fun

While they have had a very quiet 2011, Spoon put their best foot forward for their headlining set on Saturday.

The band sounded extremely tight, and they continued to advance the argument that they are one of the most efficient and consistently good live bands around. Their set featured plenty of highlights, with a perfect balance of older and new material.

Britt Daniel’s unique voice was in full force, and the throat-shredding wail during “Written In Reverse” sounded just as vital as it did on record. The band utilized a full horn section during “You Got Yr Cherry Bomb” and “The Underdog,” and the inclusion of the excellent “Small Stakes” just before “The Way We Get By” was a pleasant surprise.

The Austin skyline was the perfect backdrop for the hometown heroes, and they delivered what was arguably the best set of the weekend, effortlessly of course.
