Mason Simmons leads pre-game parade across campus last semester to promote school spirit

Students at. Edward’s University are still keeping school spirit alive.

Hillraisers, the St. Edward’s student-run campus spirit program, maintains its goal to promote school spirit around campus primarily by filling seats at upcoming home games.

Four years ago, students who desired a greater sense of spirit and community around the St. Edward’s campus created Hillraisers. A small group designed their T-shirts, and they became an impressive presence at home games.

At the time of its establishment, Hillraisers was present to make noise and show support for collegiate athletes.

Those involved in Hillraisers create as much chaos and celebration in a special section of the stands by cheering and throwing free prizes into the audience. Hillraisers work to keep the crowd motivated and invested in the game.

Hillraisers was also created to combat the problem of students coming to St. Edward’s but planning to transfer to the University of Texas, according to Hillraisers president Beverly Pappas, a junior.

“There was too much burnt orange and not enough blue and gold,” Pappas said.

Pappas, who has been a part of Hillraisers since her freshman year, has noticed that membership has grown drastically as the years and sports seasons progress.

“We just added around 150 new members,” Pappas said. “It’s been a great addition to the already existing members.”

To successfully meet their goals, Hillraisers has organized separate groups that branch out to plan exactly what events will be riddled with perks.

The E-Board, which contains six members, ensures that free food and T-shirts will continue to be prominent at certain games.

“Working with the E-Board has improved the attendance at games,” Pappas said. “It’s a nice way of getting some swag for going to a game.”

In addition to the E-Board, Hillraisers has worked closely with the University Programming Board’s spirit coordinator Claire Broxson to guarantee that advertisements are promoted throughout campus.

The Student E-News, posted flyers and word of mouth have proven to be the best sources of advertisement for students.

“I always look out for information in e-mails,” senior Peter Kerwin said. “Since I’m not on campus all day, it’s convenient to have the dates sent to me.”

Other students dedicated to promoting school spirit have worked through Hillraisers to achieve their own spirit displays.

Junior Hilltopper enthusiast Mason Simmons, who planned and lead a pre-game parade across campus last year, has become the go-to student for game day information.

“Posters only work so well,” Pappas said. “So if you see Mason walking around in his gold shirt, be sure to ask him when the game is.”

Students who wish to be part of the Hillraiser spirit team can contact Pappas directly.

“If you like Pluckers, Chick-Fil-A or just raising hill, you should join the Hillraisers,” Pappas said.

The Hillraisers will host their next event at the women’s soccer game on Wednesday Sept. 22 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the St. Edward’s soccer field.
