Hike enough to cool off in the river

The adventure you seek is not on the screens of your devices; it’s out beyond your windowsill.

Austin, Texas happens to be a hot spot for outdoor activities; from paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake to playing volleyball at Zilker Park. However, one of Austin’s hidden gems lies only a few miles west of campus. Its name is the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

It’s a perfect weekend getaway for any one person and their group of friends. One can easily spend hours enjoying the sync views the Greenbelt has to offer.

The extensive trail system winds through the property giving any adventure seeker out there an endless amount of possible escapades through the trees. The trail is relatively shady because the canopy blocks most of the sun’s light so it typically is a bit cooler than an open field.

With that being said, one should still always put on some sunscreen beforehand to avoid sunburns and drink water to prevent dehydration.

The trail can also be rocky in some places so it is important to wear the proper shoe attire to avoid injury. It’s recommended that anyone traveling on the trail should wear either hiking boots or some form of athletic shoe.

If you manage to hike long enough, you may end up at a point in the trail where you can take a dip in the river to cool off; so you may want to pack a swimsuit if that interests you.

The river back also provides an optimal space to tan; or if you’re feeling antsy you may even be able to play a game of volleyball or soccer if you have enough people with you.

A hike in the woods and a dip in the river can be the perfect way to destress after a hectic week of school. So, go and find an adventure instead of surfing the web or playing video games this weekend. Life is too precious to be spent locked behind four walls and a roof.

As most parents would say: Go out and get some fresh air.
