Dogs in dorms? Not a good idea
Living with dogs in your dorm room easily sounds like the No. 1 dream any dog lover might have during college. You could walk them whenever you want, show them off to friends, and have a cuddle session when you’re stressed. A dog is a best friend to any human, so why not just let them live with the freshmen in the dorms?
I love dogs and have been with them since I was born, but I was always in an environment where I could give them attention whenever I pleased. However, this is no longer realistic because of how busy students are in college. Students have classes in sporadic time slots, back-to-back classes with no breaks and need time for themselves.
Besides classes, students have many organizations in which they are involved, plenty of homework and fun social lives to which they attend. A college student doesn’t have time to take care of a dog.
Nobody really thinks of the logistics when the idea of “having a dog live in the dorm” pops into their head. Nobody has thought to sit back and think about how much attention dogs deserve and require.
If anyone is busy for a few hours straight, those could be the times when the dog needs to be fed or let outside. Yes, people can argue they can make time for dogs because they know how much requirements these animals need. Yet, it’s not realistic because many other elements come into dogs living on campus, such as financial strain and usually erratic dog behaviors.
Dogs aren’t born into the world trained to have good behavior and restroom breaks. A dog could easily destroy furniture or pee in the dorm room, creating a less-than-pleasant situation for roommates. The sensitive hearing of dogs can cause them to bark at anything, which could easily disturb the surrounding residents. Nobody wants to hear a dog barking constantly.
Nobody, even me, thought of the fact that we have to spend money on these dogs for food. I’m 99 percent sure most of us college students are broke and barely have enough food to pay for ourselves, yet alone another animal. We cannot just buy dog food with Topper Tender, even though that would be cute.
These all seem like behavioral, money or time issues, which can all be addressed. But it wouldn’t be the easiest task to accomplish. We just all have to think realistically about the fact that dogs require so much attention, training and needs that we wouldn’t be able to fulfill while being in college.
