Kesha’s tears tell truth, not enough to free her

What we have here is a classic case of “he said, she said.” But in this case, she said “rape.” Kesha’s ongoing trial to release herself from a man and a contract that took her innocence has left her in worse shape than she started. I believe that Kesha is innocent and should be released from her contract with Dr. Luke. But people, namely our legal system, have been treating her like the “little girl who cried wolf.”

Despite her very obvious tears and her very obvious pain, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich has decided that Kesha stay legally bound in her contract with Sony and her alleged rapist.

In an effort to see things from both sides, I decided to hear the story from Dr. Luke’s perspective, or at least from his lawyer’s. Dr. Luke’s point of view is only heard through his lawyer, Christine Lepera, with the exception of a few tweets from the man himself. Luke’s lawyer sees Kesha as “campaigning.” She thinks Kesha is essentially dragging Dr. Luke’s name through the mud, spreading lies and spinning malicious stories to extort him in any petty way she can.

Dr. Luke is a very notable figure in the music production industry and has worked with a variety of female artists on hit videos and songs. He is a very successful man with a lot to lose. Some believe that Kesha is preying on this and extorting it.

However, Kesha says that she has seen, experienced and suffered under a very different man than the one the lawyer presents. Dr. Luke physically, emotionally and sexually abused Kesha, preying on her innocence and dreams of stardom to keep her under his thumb for this long. And she has now come out with the most glaring accusation of rape.

Rape is never something that should be taken lightly or with any sort of suspicion. It is a violation and an atrocity that, unfortunately, many men and women have experienced. That being said, rape isn’t something that many people are very vocal about.

There is a negative social stigma surrounding rape and most who have experienced it tend not to tell anyone about it, let alone take it to court. That could be taken two ways — either Kesha is really brave or she is saying anything that’ll get the attention she wants.

Although I am usually one who takes most things with a grain of salt, I am still siding with Kesha on this one. This isn’t the first time a career contract has bound a celebrity in an adverse way, for example Miley Cyrus, and it certainly won’t be the last. But this particular contract came with unwanted abuse and suffering that Kesha has been brave enough to speak out against.

While it is very hard to prove who is right or wrong in this case, there is no denying the truth behind Kesha’s tears as she cried in court when the judge released her decision. It’s hard to deny that kind of pain. Whichever way the case goes, I am on the side of truth and freedom. #freekesha.
