YouTube: time suck or time well spent?

Watching cats climb into tiny boxes, learning how to tie knots like Bear Grylls; laughing at Charlie biting his brother’s finger; or getting angry after constantly hearing Rebecca Black’s annoyingly catchy music video “Friday” do not even begin to list the ways that YouTube has provided its users with entertainment.

YouTube videos have an endless amount of possibilities. Videos range from funny, sad and interesting to gross, informative and exciting. Most of these videos are entertaining, yet undoubtedly time wasting. Time-wasting material is inevitable on the Internet, but is YouTube riddled with too much of it? Maybe. But I, along with millions of other YouTube users, do not care. If I’m getting a good laugh or learning something new, I consider my time to be well spent.

Besides, everybody needs a break from his or her serious school day or work day to relax by watching the humor that is other people’s lives. Thanks to YouTube, people can escape their own reality and enter into another’s for a couple of minutes.

However YouTube is not only a source for time-wasting entertainment. The site is also used as a source of informational material. “How To'” videos are very popular, and people can learn how to do almost anything through a visual experience, which makes learning easier for many. You can learn how to braid your hair or how to get a six-pack in 3 minutes. I might be exaggerating, but I’m sure it can be done.

YouTube might primarily serve as entertainment for the average viewer, but it also serves as a talent showcase for people to reach stardom. Justin Bieber became the teen heartthrob he is today because his mom uploaded videos onto YouTube of him singing. Due to YouTube, and of course Mrs. Bieber, teen girls can now belt out “Baby” in showers across the globe.

YouTube channels have also become very popular. The “Shaytards” and “CTFxC” are just two of many daily video logs that basically show other people’s lives. A big bonus: YouTube pays the creators of these channels because of the number of views their videos have received. In addition to providing free entertainment and education, YouTube also gives some people a career. If that isn’t more incentive to waste your time on YouTube, I don’t know what is.

YouTube is a website of endless entertainment and a way people can witness other people’s lives and personalities through the lens of a video camera. So what if I want to waste an hour of my time watching Beyonce’s new music video over and over again? If I have time to waste, you can guarantee I’ll be wasting my time laughing and learning on YouTube.
