Alumni and students face off in baseball game

St. Edward’s University baseball team alumni and their families gathered last weekend at St. Edward’s for the second annual Baseball Alumni Weekend.

The weekend began on Friday afternoon with a scrimmage between St. Edward’s and McLennan Community College at Lucian-Hamilton Field. Later that evening over 80 baseball alumni, current players and alumni family members celebrated at Opal Divine’s in Penn Field.

The weekend concluded on Saturday afternoon with a game between current Hilltopper baseball players and baseball alumni from the classes of 1993 through 2010. Ultimately, the current Hilltoppers defeated the alumni team 9-1.

“It’s always fun to watch the guys that have been here in the past play in a no pressure situation,” St. Edward’s baseball head coach Rob Penders said.

Burke O’Rourke, class of 1951, threw the ceremonial first pitch in the alumni game.

After a scoreless first two innings, Logan Wood, class of 2006, hit a home run off senior Landon Patterson, scoring the alumni team’s only run of the game.

The Hilltoppers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and five more runs in the fifth inning.

The final two runs for the Hilltoppers occured in the sixth inning when junior Adam Shank batted two runs in with a triple.

Junior Matthew Anderson picked up the save by throwing three innings and allowing only one hit.

“[The game] was fun,” Dexter Moreno, class of 2010, said. “It’s good to get out there with all these alum that I know. I’m also glad to see that the baseball team looks pretty good.”

Moreno has been back on the hilltop this year as a volunteer assistant coach for the team.

Immediately following the alumni game, Hoover’s Southern Cooking catered a late lunch, courtesy of O’Rourke.

“We look forward to building this event into a bigger thing as we go into the years here,” Penders said.
