The Hilltoppers took on West Texas A&M and Texas Woman’s University at home this past weekend.

The Hilltoppers are currently ranked sixth in the nation and first in the South Central region.

On Friday, St. Edward’s tied the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs 2-2. The Hilltoppers fell to the Lady Buffs during penalty kicks in last season’s Sweet 16 match.

West Texas was the first to score in the 12th minute, but St. Edward’s came back six minutes later with a goal by junior Crystal Trevino.

Ten minutes into the second half senior Janae Averett scored the Hillltoppers’ second goal with the help of Trevino and freshman Rachel Murray.

The Hilltoppers were ahead 2-1 for most of the second half, but with less than two minutes left, the Lady Buffs scored and tied the match.

After two overtime periods with no goals, the game ended 2-2 with St. Edward’s out-shooting West Texas 13-4.

The Hilltoppers returned to the field Sunday to play Texas Woman’s University.

After 12 shots and less than 15 minutes of play left, the Hilltoppers took the lead when freshman Kristen Hart made her first collegiate goal assisted by senior Emily Arnold.

The Hilltoppers’ defense only allowed Texas Woman’s two shots the entire game.

“I think that the challenges we faced this weekend made us an even better team,” Trevino said.

The Hilltoppers’ record is currently 5-0-1.

“We are really excited to play Incarnate Word on Wednesday,” Trevino said. “Our team plays with so much passion and we are all looking forward to a new challenge.”

The Hilltoppers are back in action when they take on Incarnate Word at home on Wed. Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
