New Snapchat features innovation for millenials

Last week, to almost everyone’s surprise, Snapchat introduced a new feature called “Discover” that has multiple news organizations delivering news to users daily.

For better or for worse, Snapchat has reinvented the daily newspaper for millennials.

Timed for our short attention spans and hectic lifestyles, the new Snapchat was blatantly crafted for those in the cyber age.

To get to the Discover page, users will need the most recent version of Snapchat. The hardest part comes next when users need to swipe left past stories or down to focus on a story which has caught their interest.

While limited to 12 organizations right now, Discover is a glimpse of the bright future of journalism lying ahead. Snapchat partnered with CNN, Comedy Central, Cosmopolitan, Daily Mail, ESPN, Food Network, National Geographic, People, Vice, Yahoo! News and Warner Music Group.

Instead of a static photo and a bunch of text below it, Snapchat and its partners have included videos and music on top of the traditional photo and text.

Now, Snapchat is a news outlet for more than just what music your friends are singing to in the car. No longer just a distributor, Snapchat has become a producer. Snapchat hired journalists from other companies in an attempt to make their own content rival that of major producers.

Instead of forcing users to go directly to their website, these organizations are bringing their content directly to users’ fingertips.

The stories are interactive and engaging.

Reminiscent of websites like Buzzfeed or Cracked, stories in the form of listicles are able to keep the audience’s attention.

As a news organization this is very exciting, but it’s not available to those outside the Snapchat’s chosen ones. The feature just launched, so it’s understandable not to let it go out into the wilderness of other organizations.

However, Snapchat needs to make Discover and its creation tools open to any organization that wants it in the future.

Discover could help to change the way journalism is presented and reported.

We are in an innovative age where print journalism is lagging behind hip news sites. Now, even those newfangled websites are no match for what is yet to be created.

Imagine going to Snapchat, having Hilltop Views on the Discover page, and catching up on that day’s news.

Now that’s exciting.

When Snapchat does let more organizations use Discover, Hilltop Views will certainly sign up for it.
