Weekly ‘Flix Fix: Film shows complexity of mind

Weekly ‘Flix Fix takes the legwork out of wading through thousands of film choices on Netflix, bringing you the most truly bizarre, quirky and outright amazing gems instant streaming has to offer.

The movie “The Science of Sleep,” written and directed by Michael Gondry, possesses a creative, interesting vision into the complexity of the brain when dreaming. The movie falls into the category of an indie drama with a hint of romance.

“The Science of Sleep” shares the surreal and intriguing characteristics as the revered movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” also written and directed by Gondry. This same maniac of a writer translates his quirky, weird expressions of the mind in this movie.

The main character, Gael Garcia Bernal, a shy, bilingual lost soul in society, is very confined in his own world of dreams. Having never completed the developmental stages from childhood to adulthood, the protagonist is stuck in his youth not really knowing how to express himself in a decisive manner.

While watching the battle Bernal has with himself over the budding romance being formed between him and his neighbor, viewers may find it easy to fall in love with the character and secretly pray for him to end up happy. The mind game, created by Gondry’s brilliant, literary ways, leaves the audience confused at times, attempting to distinguish fantasy from reality.

The film, which showcased at the Sundance, Seattle and Edinburgh film festivals, presents a good look into the mind of a character journeying through a young part of his life. With an unexplainable ending leaving the audience to form its own possible outcome, this is an adorable and relatable movie that may potentially bring smiles to the faces of many.

Although not recommended for viewers who prefer a blissful, happy, unrealistic ending for their characters, the film is aimed at those who are familiar with the pains of life and inhale the beautiful little moments given to them.
