Walk in, waddle out: Austinites feast this weekend at picnic

Local food trailers are parking on Auditorium Shores Oct. 22 for the second annual Gypsy Picnic Trailer Food Festival.

More than 40 food trailers will be on site this weekend dishing out a variety of eats and treats. Austin staples like East Side Kings, Gourdough’s Big. Fat. Donuts, Hey Cupcake! and Torchy’s Tacos are just a few of the eateries featured at the festival.

A smorgasbord of mouthwatering menus will be offered at Gypsy Picnic. Irie Bean’s jerk chicken and Caribbean rice, pulled pork sliders with fried plantain and quinoa and sweet potato griddlecakes sound perfectly enticing. At The Peached Tortilla, a banh mi taco with braised pork belly, BBQ brisket taco with peach BBQ sauce and the Szechuan veggie taco will be hard to turn down. Don’t forget to stop by Bananarchy for a frozen banana or Coolhaus for ice cream sandwiches.

If the range of creative cuisine sounds overwhelming to you, don’t worry; every food truck at Gypsy Picnic will have a $3 sample menu so you can try a bit of everything on your noshing adventure.

The Gypsy Picnic Trailer Food Cook-Off will give each food truck a chance to contend their menu. Ten expert foodie judges will choose the Best Taco, Best on a Bun, Best Vegetarian, Best Ethnic, Best Drink and Best Dessert.

Foodies attending the festival can choose their favorite food trailer through KGSR Fan Favorite. Each trailer will display a Fan# number. Text this number to 43981 for your favorite picks and be entered to win two season passes to the 2012 KGSR Music Lounge.

Besides ample grub and goodies, Gypsy Picnic will also feature music by BOY, Alabama Shakes, Dale Watson and Delta Spirit. Check the event’s website for lineup times.

Gypsy Picnic is family-friendly with activities for kids and pups all day. Kids can attend story time, have their faces painted and fortunes told and watch magicians, acrobats and jugglers. Man’s best friend will also not be left out. Owners can dress their dogs to the nines for the Gypsy Pup Parade.

Football fans are not forgotten, either. Live games will be streamed at the CLEAR booth. Those who just want to chill out can play Nintendo Wii at CLEAR as well.

Everyone can hop over to the Prius versus Creation Station to compete for prizes, decorate T-shirts and take snapshots in the photo booth. Those over 18 can enter to win a Toyota Prius.

Gypsy Picnic will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 22. Admission is free, but bring plenty of cash for food and parking. There is no on-site parking available at Auditorium Shores, so check the www.gypsypicnic.com for parking and transportation options.
