Game raises disability awareness

Air-ball after air-ball, blister after blister, St. Edward’s University faculty, staff and students realized the challenges that come with playing basketball in a wheelchair. But swish after swish, fast break after fast break, the Austin Rec’ers proved that playing basketball in a wheelchair is a skill, not a stigma. The St. Edward’s Disability Committee organized an exhibition game in the Recreation and Convocation Center Feb. 25.  A team of St. Edward’s volunteers played the Rec’ers, a local wheelchair basketball team that competes nationally.

Softball hits speed bump

Just hours before the 30th anniversary of the miracle on ice, where the United States defeated the dominant Soviet Union in the 1980 Lake Placid, N.Y., games, the U.S. team pulled off another somewhat improbable victory over the Olympics’ host nation. Amidst what was described by most players as the most hostile atmosphere that they had ever encountered as a professional athlete, the U.S. found a way to win.The Canadians came into the match up favored. The host nation had bigger names, bigger players and the bigger expectations. Yet, the Americans still found a way to win.

Curling and hockey brought to forefront

COURTSIDE CHRONICLES COMMENTARY

As the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics come to a close and the flame is extinguished, it’s time we look back at what the Olympics have brought us this year. It’s easy to remember who won which medals and which countries were let down with a lack of medals, but as a whole, these Winter Olympics have had some of the most exciting and competitive events. However, as the flame extinguishes, Canada has brought two sports into the eyes of the public: curling and hockey.

Canada gets an “eh” for effort

COURTSIDE CHRONICLES

Disaster struck when 21-year-old Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, who would have been competing in his first Olympic games, died in a tragic training accident. Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled while traveling at over 90 miles per hour, flew over the track’s wall and hit a steel pole. Many Olympic athletes and fans saw this tragic event as a bad omen for the beginning of the Olympics and looked to the opening ceremony for relief. And all troubles aside, the opening ceremony was incredible. Canada couldn’t have done a better job at easing the sorrows and doubts.
