PRIDE makes strides by marching in city wide parade

For the first time in its history, PRIDE, the gay rights group at St. Edward’s University, marched in a citywide gay rights parade.

The group’s participation was the result of protracted negotiations between its members and the university, specifically over how the university’s name would be displayed during the march.

While PRIDE is a recognized student group on campus, its activities have been limited.

“Never in the history of the university has this happened, and we recognize how difficult it may have been for some to approve this,” PRIDE President Andrew Guerrero said. “This is not where things should stay, however. We’ve made progress, but there’s still so much more that needs to made.”

The goal of PRIDE at St. Edward’s is to educate its members and the rest of the community about LGBT issues and to give a voice to students. Faculty advisor Alexandra Barron says that PRIDE, which stands for Promoting Respect, Inclusion, and Empowerment,  aims to involve students and let them be part of a community.

“PRIDE makes sure that voices are being heard, makes sure that students feel welcome and a vibrant part of St. Edward’s. We don’t want students to ever feel tolerated,” Barron said.

Barron said that in her time at St. Edward’s, she has seen a surge in student involvement in the organization. She believes this is because the world is changing its view of LGBT issues, which is most apparent in younger generations.

“It is not just about LGBT students,” Barron said.
