Women’s soccer wins third straight game

September 10, 2011

Women's soccer won their third straight game with a 2-0 victory over the Missouri Southern State Lions on Sept. 9. St. Edward's fans came out in large numbers to "Fill the Hill" and cheer on the team. Sophomore forward Rachel Murray scored in the tenth minute to give St. Edward's an early lead. Murray intercepted a pass, dribbled around two Lion defenders, shot with her off foot and scored from about 20 yards out. This is the second straight game in which Murray was the first player on either side to score. She is also the only player to score a goal in each of the Hilltoppers' three matches this season. The Hilltoppers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the thirty-seventh minute when Senior Kelly Servage scored on a fortunate goal. Servage sent a pass toward the goalie box when the ball bounced off a Lion defender and ricocheted into the net. Servage's goal capped off the scoring, as neither team netted a ball in the second half. St. Edward's continued to dominate on both sides of the ball throughout the second half. The team put constant pressure on the Lions defense with 21 shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Lions got off only five shots on goal, all of which were saved by St. Edward's goalkeeper Claire Tiltson. The Hilltoppers have set ambitious goals for themselves this season. Last year's squad made it all the way to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Divison II Tournament, and the team is confident they can advance even further this year. "I definitely think we can do better than last year. I believe that one-hundred percent," said Senior forward Brianna Hinnenkamp. Despite coming off a convincing win, Hinnenkamp felt SEU "could have put this game away a little
