Softball team’s losing streak ends with a shutout victory

The St. Edward’s University softball team had a hard-fought win against Texas A&M-International University that ended a six-game losing streak.

In a doubleheader on Saturday, SEU avoided a sweep by winning Game 2 with a shutout score of 6-0 on their home field.

In the second inning, junior centerfielder Cydney Ervin stole third base, then scored on a throwing error. Sophomore second baseman Alex Mayfield had an run-batted-in (RBI) single to bring in sophomore left fielder Breah Whitten. Junior right fielder Laura Alvarado had a sacrifice fly to bring in freshman pinch runner Aubrey Ruiz for a 3-0 score.

Ervin hit her first homerun (HR) of the season to start the fourth inning. Senior designated hitter Marisa Bogart hit another solo HR in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 5-0.

In the fifth inning, Whitten hit an RBI single to bring in the speedy Ervin from second base and make the score 6-0.

On the mound, senior pitcher Sarah Debrow had seven strikeouts throughout the game and increased her wins record to 11-6.

Despite the Hilltopper win, A&M-International still took the weekend series, 2-1.

At the beginning of the season, the Hilltoppers lost five of their first eight games. All three wins had final scores where the opponent was down by one run.

However, by mid-February SEU was swinging the bat well and were on a six-game winning streak. The team also had several scattered wins throughout the rest of February.

The team had another five-game winning streak at the beginning of March, but their streak-ending loss turned into a six game losing streak that has finally ended.

Currently, the team stands 18-14 (6-6 HC) with home record of 9-5 and an away record of 1-7 and 16 games left in the regular season. The St. Edward’s softball is currently tied for fourth in the conference with Oklahoma Christian University.

Senior pitchers Debrow and Katelyn Klug both have  a pair of shut-outs, and were each named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 2-8 and March 9-15.

Batting leaders include: sophomore Alex Mayfield, seniors Faith Roberts and Caitie Carney, junior Cydney Ervin, and freshman Morgan Dufour, who was named the Heartland Conference Hitter of the Week at the beginning of March. SEU will travel to Odessa, Texas on Thursday to play the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in a three-game series.
