Shopping for upcycled and second-hand clothes helps the students show their authentic style.

St. Edward’s University is a diverse campus that characterizes itself for students that express themselves through the way they dress. When walking through campus, it is inevitable to not stop and admire the unique styles that students wear.

“Fashion to me is about feeling confident, is about what works and what doesn’t work for you,” sophomore Ixel Aguilar said. “Fashion is comfortable and presentable to me.”Her style is inspired from her identity as a Chicana and Chicanas from Texas and California.

Students share a passion for finding unique pieces of clothing in Austin. “I thrift a lot,” Enrique Rivas Carbajal said. “If you go to the Goodwill bins, you can get a whole duffle bag for like $20 bucks, and it’s so much clothes.” The freshman is wearing a thrifted outfit. When asked about where students get their style inspiration from, each one had a different source such as art, personal identity, social media, TV shows or even fashion from a specific time period. “I’m really inspired by one specific example of this character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” sophomore Kat Cruz said. The sophomore categorizes her style as “a collection of different things.” “I would say punk is the number one thing that I’m always going for or like grunge,” Cruz said. She is wearing black boots from Unif, which is one of her favorite pieces. (Sofia Palacios / Hilltop Views)
“Most of the time I just find interesting pieces that I really like and then just find a way to do it,” freshman Erika Ishikawa said when sharing about how she sews and creates hand-made pieces. “If I can find a pattern that’s perfect, sometimes I have to finesse it. I just had to figure out how to make this skirt.”The freshman is shown wearing two of her handcrafted pieces, the hat and skirt. (Sofia Palacios / Hilltop Views)
The Hilltoppers share what fashion means to each one of them. “Fashion is a way to express myself when I feel down, it helps me just be myself,” Celina-Marie Kuehne said. When asked about a favorite piece, Kuehne said “my crochet top that I made myself.” (Sofia Palacios / Hilltop Views)
